Andreas Gursky, Chicago Board of Trade II, 1999.

Welcome to the German Program

The works of the contemporary German photographer Andreas Gursky have been described by the Museum of Modern Art, New York as constituting "one of the most original achievements of the past decade . . . and one of the most complex." Gursky's subjects, says MOMA, "struck him as representative of a contemporary zeitgeist…Gursky's world of the 1990s is big, high-tech, fast-paced, expensive, and global."

Gursky's photographs are representative of our global, high-tech worlds and the many interrelations between German speaking countries and the United States. Economically, culturally, linguistically there are many connections between us. Over one thousand American companies do business with German-speaking countries and over one thousand companies based in German-speaking countries have subsidiaries in the U.S. Knowing German and understanding German culture can boost your chances of getting a job and increase your ability to undertake research in the sciences, history, philosophy, art, and many other fields. About 20% of all Americans claim German ancestry. Learning German can help you discover your family roots and facilitate your travels for family research, tourism, or business. The German and English languages share a common ancestral language. This makes learning German "a natural" if you speak English.

The German Program at MSU invites you to get with the newest zeitgeist--and explore GERMAN!
