Master's Degree Requirements
Option 1: Thesis 30 semester hours of approved courses including English 6983 and English 6993, or a minimum of 18 semester hours of approved courses including English 6983 and English 6993 in addition to a related minor. English 5023 does not count toward the 30 hours of the degree. Option 2: Non-Thesis 36 hours of approved courses, or 24 hours with an approved minor, and a substantial research paper meeting the guidelines established by the college and the Graduate Council. English 5023 does not count toward the 36 hours of the degree. Option 1 or 2 with Teaching Assistantship A student pursuing either option 1 or 2 may apply for a Graduate Assistantship, which, if successfully completed, will lead to a Teaching Assistantship, generally in the student's second year of graduate study. A student awarded a Graduate Assistantship must complete 6 semester hours of English 5023 in addition to the degree hours noted above. In general, a student pursuing a Teaching Assistantship will not include a minor field in his or her master's degree. Note: Under each of the options, no more than 12 semester hours of dual-listed or 4000-level classes will apply to the degree. Of the 12 hours, no more than 6 hours will be 4000-level. REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GRADUATE MINOR IN ENGLISH A master's candidate in another field may obtain a minor in English by completing the following requirements: A minimum of 12 semester hours approved by the English graduate coordinator. Education majors selecting a divided minor may be approved for a 9-hour minor by the English graduate coordinator. |
