 Prothro-Yeager College of Humanities and Social Sciences BACHELOR OF APPLIED ARTS AND SCIENCES What is the B.A.A.S. degree? The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree is designed to offer students with vocational-technical training and/or professional experience in occupational fields the opportunity to obtain a baccalaureate degree. Such experienced professional/vocational students may obtain credit toward this degree via accredited college-level course work and/or certain types of professional and educational training. Students who pursue the degree are required to complete the academic core requirements, thirty hours of advanced credit that is complementary to the vocational-technical or professional area, and any additional hours necessary to meet the 124-hour university requirement as stated in the catalog. Will the B.A.A.S. degree aid me in my present career? After a few years of employment, many people find that they have the occupational skills needed for initial employment, but frequently lack the credentials and training for career advancement. The B.A.A.S. degree can provide those skills needed for advancement. Suppose I want to change my job or career goals? The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree may allow an individual to change career goals. In many cases advancement from technician to manager requires a bachelor’s degree and academic training. This degree, with careful selection of appropriate courses, can provide the avenue to either career advancement or a total change of career. Do I need to have a formal degree to be accepted into the B.A.A.S. degree program? No formal degree is required. However, you must have a minimum of 24 hours of credit in vocational-technical education. These credits may be earned from junior or community colleges, Midwestern State University, other senior institutions, vocational-technical schools, ACE accredited armed forces schools, and work experience. Credit from work experience is limited to a maximum of 6 semester hours, based on a maximum of 2 hours for each year of successful qualifying experience. Therefore, it is possible to be accepted with a minimum of 18 hours credit and three years work experience. I already have an associate degree. How much of my course work can be accepted towards the B.A.A.S.? Sixty-nine hours of college level credits earned at a junior college are acceptable in transfer and applicable to this degree. In most cases the majority of the credits earned will fulfill requirements in the occupational specialty and foundation areas. Senior college credit may also be accepted. What is non-traditional credit? Non-traditional credit is college credit earned from other modes of learning than formal courses in a standard classroom. Midwestern State University accepts non-traditional credit toward the B.A.A.S. from various sources such as: CLEP, DANTES, correspondence courses, work experience, military service, self-study authenticated by examination, ACE and APICS. Midwestern has articulation agreements with many junior colleges. B.A.A.S. Total.........................................................124 hrs. (including KNES or P.E. activity courses) What is the Occupational Specialty? It is comprised of the vocational-technical courses and work experience that you have completed and are transferring to MSU. What is Professional Development? It is the key to the program and is custom designed for each student. Courses are selected from one or more academic specialties to provide a focus that will complement the student’s academic background so that the student can now successfully attain his/her specific career goals. For example, an industrial technician may wish to attain supervisory status by taking professional development course work in management. This is an example of the many options available. The student may also elect to gain six advanced credit hours in professional development through formal internships (B.A.A.S. 3113) with an approved employer. Students are limited to not more than twenty-five percent of their total credit hours in courses transferable to a program in a school of business and not more than fifteen credit hours in business school courses completed at Midwestern State University. However, students may select a minor in Business Administration with the approval of the Dean of the Dillard College of Business Administration. Where are classes offered? Classes are offered at Midwestern State University’s Main Campus in Wichita Falls, the Universities Center at Dallas, remote locations and Internet. Class schedules are available at the B.A.A.S. office and at site locations, or on the B.A.A.S. web page: http://libarts.mwsu.edu/baas . Classes at Midwestern State University are offered during the day or evening on regular fall/spring schedules. You can apply to Midwestern State University over the Internet.
