Admittance to Midwestern State University

 ¨      Unless exempt, a student must meet Texas Success Initiative (TSI) through one of the following assessment tests:  THEA (formerly TASP), Acuplacer, Asset, or Compass.

¨      If a student does not meet THEA/TASP requirements developmental courses in Reading, Writing, and Math may be required prior to enrolling in core curriculum and advanced level courses.

¨      Based upon TSI status a student may also be required to take an MSU Placement test in Math or English.  http://registrar.mwsu.edu/success.asp

¨      Students are not admitted to the University until they have received an admittance/acceptance letter from the Admissions Office. The Admissions Office must have official transcripts mailed directly from the schools attended to the MSU Admissions Office. http://admissions.mwsu.edu/apply.asp

B.A.A.S. Program Admittance

¨      Before acceptance into the Bachelor’s of Applied Arts and Sciences (B.A.A.S.) Program a student must have a degree plan. http://libarts.mwsu.edu/B.A.A.S./dist_info.asp

¨      To be eligible for the B.A.A.S. program a student must have 24 hours of credit in the occupational specialty area of the degree plan. This could include 6 hours of credit awarded for work experience, accredited college/university hours, vocational/technical hours from American Council on Education (ACE) accredited programs, or academic hours that are not part of the core requirements.

¨      Evaluation of the transcript (Student Transfer Credit Evaluation) is completed by the MSU Registrar after the student has officially applied and all transcripts have been receive.  The Transfer Credit Evaluation may indicate that credit is not accepted for a technical course. A notation of “not accepted” on the Evaluation does not necessarily mean these courses will not be credited to the B.A.A.S. Program.  Such credit, when it is from an accredited program or college, will be evaluated by the Director of the B.A.A.S. Program. Remedial or developmental credit is not included in college hours earned toward a degree.

¨Distance Education students must go to the Distance Learning Orientation website to clear orientation.
http://students.mwsu.edu/studentactivities/distance.asp

¨      A student who is a military veteran should supply a copy of their DD214 and any other military records of education. Veterans can access information regarding transcripts for their military training electronically. http://www.acenet.edu

¨      Texas veterans may be eligible for financial or student aid through the Hazelwood Act.  http://registrar.mwsu.edu/veterans/

Degree Plan

¨                Degree plans are tentative until all official transcripts have been evaluated by the Registrar’s office. When evaluated and updated a final degree plan will be sent to the student for signature. The signed original will be part of the student’s official records in the Registrar’s office. All seniors must have a signed degree plan on file before applying for a graduation audit.

¨                The degree plan is divided into 3 main areas, all of which must be completed to reach the 124 minimum hours needed to graduate:

¨      Occupational Specialty area requires 36 hours;

¨      Core Curriculum requires 48-54 hours to complete;

¨      Professional Development area requires 36 hours to complete.

¨                Work experience credit may be applied to the Occupational Specialty area and limited to 6 hours; 2 hours of credit for each year of qualifying work experience, for a maximum of 3 years. The employment verification letter must be on letterhead, signed by the employer, and include the encompassing dates of employment. The letter must be sent to the B.A.A.S. office.

¨                Work experience and vocational/technical credit, if applicable, will be credited to the transcript when a student is enrolled for the semester.

¨                The B.A.A.S. degree plan is limited to 15 hours from the Midwestern State University School of Business.  Thirty (30) hours is the maximum business hours that can be on the degree plan. This includes courses transferred to Midwestern State University that are the equivalent to courses taught at Midwestern. Business-related courses that are not equivalent to Midwestern State University’s courses do not count against the 30 hour limit. An exception to this rule is the Business Minor.

¨                A student may take a business minor under the B.A.A.S. program with approval from the Dean of the Dillard College of Business Administration.  The business minor is limited to those courses stated in the Midwestern State University catalog. Students are limited to the courses listed in the business minor.

¨                Students at Texas state universities must pursue a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies to obtain a teacher's certification at the end of a bachelor’s degree. Completion of other degrees, to include the B.A.A.S. degree, may require additional hours beyond the degree to qualify for teacher certification. Only six (6) Education (EDUC)  hours may be applied to the B.A.A.S. degree.

¨                No more than 69 hours of transfer credit will be accepted from a junior (2 year) college. This “69-hour limit of junior college hours” rule does not include ACE-accredited schools or other 4-year colleges or universities.

¨                The student is responsible for keeping the degree plan current by marking courses completed and updating any applicable changes.

¨                Contact information on the degree plan must also be current. Address and phone number changes can be made through the student services link. http://www.mwsu.edu/

¨                Students should also contact the BAAS Office with address and phone number changes since these changes are not automatically received by the BAAS Office when made through student services.

Student Advising

¨                During each registration period students have an advising hold on their records to prevent them from registering without first talking with an advisor.  B.A.A.S. students must first contact an advisor to discuss courses and enrollment. The advising hold will then be lifted and the student given a PIN to register for the upcoming semester. Your PIN is a six digit number that allows access to registration and student records. http://www.mwsu.edu/

¨                Advising for distance education students is usually conducted by telephone or email. When contacting the advisor by email, the student’s full name and daytime phone number should be included in the correspondence to help with advisor follow up. Providing alternate daytime phone numbers is also helpful.

¨                When talking with an advisor the student should have the degree plan available. During the registration and advising period, it is helpful if the student has viewed and printed the schedule of courses at the B.A.A.S. homepage. http://libarts.mwsu.edu/baas/schedules.asp

¨                Students desiring to participate in the optional B.A.A.S. Internship must have a worksite and be classified as a junior (60 hours) before enrolling. Only one (1) Internship per semester is permitted and no more than six (6) hours of Internship may be applied to the B.A.A.S. degree. The hours received from the Internship are credited as advanced hours in the Professional Development area of the degree plan.   http://libarts.mwsu.edu/B.A.A.S./intern.asp

¨                Students are responsible for understanding that there is only a limited time in which to drop a course or withdraw from the university without incurring a financial penalty. Each term there are set dates to drop a course or to withdraw from the university.  http://registrar.mwsu.edu/

Graduation and other Requirements

¨                Students are advised to file for graduation at least two full semesters prior to the anticipated graduation date. The graduation audit supersedes the degree plan. Midwestern State University has three graduation months: May, August, and December, though commencement ceremonies are held in May and December months only.  http://registrar.mwsu.edu .

¨                All undergraduate students at Midwestern State University must meet the English Usage requirement by either passing the English Usage Exam (EUE) or by taking ENGL 2113. The exam should be taken when the student has between 60 and 90 credit hours and has completed ENGL 1113 and 1123 (or the transfer equivalent of English Composition I and II) http://libarts.mwsu.edu/english/wpr.asp .

¨                Students must have at least 30 hours of advanced (upper) level courses and a GPA of 2.0 to be eligible for graduation. Advanced courses are those courses normally taken at the junior/senior level and are usually numbered 3000-4000 or 300-400.

¨                Midwestern State University’s residency requirement is 31 credit hours.  The 31 hour requirement may be fulfilled by taking courses at any level (1000-4000). The six credit hours awarded for work experience, CLEP, proficiency tests, challenged courses, and courses not taken at  Midwestern State University do not count towards the 31 residency hours needed.

¨                All students are responsible for reading and understanding the school catalog and the degree plan. The catalog and the Registrar’s evaluation of requirements may supersede the degree plan.  http://registrar.mwsu.edu/catalog/
